Systems Thinking – Climate Crisis

This event was a talk and workshop organised by Mother Earth Toast Masters Club and A good Space. This workshop was really fascinating in the way it analysed and explored many social problems and economic problems and the state of the world. In focus, climate change was analysed and dissected from different angles, exploring how many small problems reinforce each other building up into a gargantuan problem.

The methodology and frameworks like the casual loops were also useful in analysing my problems like artificial environments and natural environments.

Here are the notes I took in the session.

The art of making reliable inferences, about behaviour by developing an increasingly deep understanding of the underlying structure. – Barry Richmond.

Events lead to patterns. Events are the tip of the iceberg. Patterns lie below. The systemic structures create the patterns. Mental models? — how do we think about the world affects what we do.

E.g of the mental model – stories fairy tales.

Making distinctions – things and others
Identify systems – groups – ontology.
Identify action and reaction –
Perspectives like angle, speed, ideas, people

Thinking about thinking – systems thinking.

What’s our world views? Underlying assumptions that shape our perspectives.

Sharing — by all the participants on their world views.

Everyone has a different world view and perception formed from their life experiences and cognition.

Vuca – volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous.

Global accelerator – machines, markets, Mother Nature. ( Limits to Growth ) Thank you for being late.

Peter Senge – today’s problems,s come form yesterday’s solutions.

Social system – industrial – ecological.

UN sustainable goals

Climate conversations have to positive and encouraging sharing stories, empathy, activating people.

Nature goes back to equilibrium , so we have to just enable the equilibrium to take over.

Complexity of sea level rise – e.g New York 1.5 times more than the world. – The verge science.

Causal loop diagrams

Everything is reinforcing loops. No balancing loops.

Fixes that fail – Panadol, fixes the headache but the cause comes back after a delay. Shifting the burden.

Tragedy of the commons , – hill of grass and people with cows. No one is stopping them, someone else will use it, everyone uses no one replenishes.

Tragedy of the commons – antibiotic use – cows and people – created antibiotic proof virus.

Aristotle, politics – what is common to the most gets the least amount of care.
Link to politics of the artificial.???

Learn from this workshop.
Causal loops explore scarcity.
Scarcity is a reality of the universe.

Limits to growth – the global society is likely to overshoot and then be forced to decline or contract. Due to significant delay in response and action.

Looking at what is too come?

Differing views in the people – some say collapse won’t happen , some say collapse is already happening, some say it will happen if we don’t change our economic model soon enough.

The need for discourse is self evident.

Why do we expand? The reality is one of scarcity. Because we are fighting scarcity we require the more. (Tragedy of commons), we grow because there is less.

Oliver Chua – climate rally – 10 year old. Singapore’s first climate rally.
